| The Muddler needs no introduction, it is probably the most widely used streamer pattern in the United States. Though there have been dozens of knock off patterns, I believe the muddler as originally tied is still the best. I fish it unweighted. An unweighted muddler will float and does a servicable job looking like a hopper, moth or struggling mouse. With a tiny piece of split shot in front of it (or an intermediate flyline) the muddler can be swam in slow fashion over weedbeds and shallow gravel bars. With a bunch of weight, the muddler can be stripped wildly in the shallows or allowed to settle in the deep dark waters where big fish lurk.
