The Muddler needs no introduction, it is probably the most widely used streamer pattern in the United States. Though there have been dozens of knock off patterns, I believe the muddler as originally tied is still the best. I fish it unweighted. An unweighted muddler will float and does a servicable job looking like a hopper, moth or struggling mouse. With a tiny piece of split shot in front of it (or an intermediate flyline) the muddler can be swam in slow fashion over weedbeds and shallow gravel bars. With a bunch of weight, the muddler can be stripped wildly in the shallows or allowed to settle in the deep dark waters where big fish lurk. Read Streamer Strategies to learn more about using this fly.
